Fruit Salad Musings

I don’t know what you think of when you hear “fruit salad”, but what comes to mind for me is this bizarre marshmallow fluff “salad” that was given to me at summer camp as a kid. What I want to tell you is this: fruit salad is versatile it can be complex and flavorful, it can be full of herbs and acid and sweetness and it goes gorgeously with some greek yogurt or atop labneh or cottage cheese or - dare I suggest it? - on olive oil cake or over vanilla ice cream or with granola or seeds or nuts or – or – or !!!!!

Like all of the recipes in this edition, you can really make it however you damn well please. Exclusively berries or tropical fruits or just a bunch of citrus with pomegranate seeds, basil, and a touch of maple syrup. Top it with toasty coconut! Throw in some sumac! Or a little swig of vanilla extract! Anyway, I’m getting off track; I outlined my favorite fruit salad below. I implore you to get creative and enjoy it with everything!

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup blackberries

  • ÂĽ cup mint

  • ½ cup blueberries

  • ½ cup strawberries

  • 1 orange (supremed)

  • Juice of ½ lime

  • 1 ½ tsp za’atar (all za’atars are different; I use The Home Spice and it is just as delicious on sweet as it is on savory goods)

Preparation:

Mixy-mix! Top it with toasted coconut or drizzled with honey and get after it.
